چکیده

Lattice images formed by plasmon energy-loss electrons in an energy-filtered transmission electron microscope are compared for different experimental parameters. The image resolution is primarily determined by chromatic aberration which is controlled by the width of the energy selection window. With an energy slit 3 eV in width, the plasmon loss electron image shows the same resolution and contrast as that recorded using the zero-loss electrons in a 300 kV transmission electron microscope equipped with a L a B 6 gun. A discussion on the image resolution in reference to the width of the energy window is given. PACS: 61.16.-d; 61.14.Rg Kevwords: Lattice imaging; Plasmon; Energy filtering

Optimal strategies for imaging thick biological specimens: exit wavefront reconstruction and energy-filtered imaging.

In transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of thick biological specimens, the relationship between the recorded image intensities and the projected specimen mass density is distorted by incoherent electron-specimen interactions and aberrations of the objective lens. It is highly desirable to develop a strategy for maximizing and extracting the coherent image component, thereby allowing the proje...

High-Resolution Surface Plasmon Imaging of Gold Nanoparticles by Energy Filtered Transmission Electron Microscopy

We demonstrate the imaging capabilities of energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy at high energy resolution in the low energy-loss region, reporting the first direct image of a surface plasmon of an elongated gold nanoparticle at energies around 1 eV. Using complimentary model calculations performed within the boundary element method approach we can assign the observed results to the ...

Plasmons of Hexamer and Pentamer Nanocavities Probed with Swift Electrons

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is an efficient tool for investigating the local density of optical states in single and coupled nano-systems in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) [1]. In EELS, a relativistic electron inelastically interacts with a sample, and hence loses energy by pumping the sample to a higher photonic state. The amount of energy loss of the electron is detecte...

Plasmon excitations in graphitic carbon spheres

Electron energy loss spectroscopy in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope has recently been used with success to characterize the electronic properties of closed cage nanometer-size graphitic particles. In the plasmon region, the experimental data reveal interesting size-dependent variations, which are not yet fully understood. The difficulties encountered in the interpretation of...

Plasmon excitations in graphitic carbon spheres measured by EELS

The determination of the physical properties of individual nanometer-size particles has made rapid progress with the availability of local probe techniques during the past years. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope is one experimental tool that can give insight into the intriguing properties of such small particles. The interpretation of the e...
